Bon Secours Health opens new hospital to strengthen patient care and safety

Bon Secours Health System CLG, Ireland’s largest private hospital operator, has launched a new hospital in Ballysimon, Limerick, marking the first major hospital opening in almost 20 years. The €213 million facility spans 23,050 square metres and includes 96 beds, designed to care for up to 50,000 patients annually.

The hospital addresses growing demand in the region, offering general medicine, specialty services such as cardiology, neurology, oncology, and day-case surgery. Services are being relocated to the Limerick site in phases to ensure continuity of care.

Architecture and design were delivered in collaboration with HOK’s London and Chicago studios and Reddy Architecture + Urbanism. The clinical and architectural planning prioritises person-centred care, facilitating collaboration between patients, families, and healthcare teams. Two main blocks, linked by glazed bridges and external courtyards, separate inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic, treatment, and surgical areas. Inpatient wards provide panoramic views, while a rooftop patient garden enhances wellbeing and recovery.

Sustainability and operational efficiency are central to the facility. Features include natural and LED lighting, natural ventilation of non-clinical spaces, high-performance building envelopes, air-to-water heat pumps, and EV parking. The design reduces service ductwork and promotes active travel access via public transport, pedestrian, and cycling infrastructure.
